Custom Kitchen Cabinets in West Chester, PA

West Chester fits more than 18,000 people into 1.8 square miles, and most of them live in houses that were standing long before anyone planned a kitchen around a dishwasher. With its brick twins and rowhomes, Federal and Greek Revival townhouses, and Victorian singles a few blocks from the courthouse, the borough earned the nickname "the Athens of Pennsylvania" for its architecture. Nearly 80 percent of it now sits inside the local historic district.

We build kitchen cabinets for those houses, taking into account their rich history, and for the newer neighborhoods just past the borough line, too. Every cabinet is made custom in our Honey Brook shop and installed by our own crew.

Kitchen Work Inside the Historic District

The district's review process is about what the street sees: facades, windows, porches, and roofs. A kitchen at the back of a twin is usually a different matter, and replacing cabinetry inside an existing room rarely comes anywhere near a review board.

However, when a kitchen project reaches the outside of the house, like with the installation of a new window over the sink, a relocated back door, or an exterior vent for a range hood, the borough will have to sign off. We flag those at the first measure so you can check with the borough before anything is ordered, and not after.

Inside, a 19th-century West Chester house has its own unwritten rules. Ceilings run taller than in a modern house, window and door casings are wide and deep, and the floor almost always slopes somewhere. We measure the room as it actually sits and scribe cabinet ends and toe kicks to the real wall and floor, so there is no strip of filler covering the difference.

Designing the Narrow Borough Kitchen

Custom kitchen cabinets in West Chester, PA The typical kitchen in a borough twin or rowhome is long and narrow, often set up as a galley or a single wall, sometimes with a door at each end. Stock cabinets don't fit well with this unique shape, because they come in fixed widths and depths and the room doesn't.

Building to the room allows for options a catalog doesn't have:

  • Shallower base cabinets where the aisle is tight, so two people can pass by without one of them backing into the oven.
  • A 12-inch-deep pantry wall on the side that can't take full-depth cabinets. These can hold a surprising amount of dry goods in a room that has nowhere else to put them.
  • Uppers that run to the ceiling, with the top row reserved for the things you use twice a year.
  • Drawers instead of doors on almost every base cabinet, because in a narrow kitchen you can't get down on your knees to reach the back of a shelf.
  • Appliance sizing planned from the start. A 24-inch dishwasher or a counter-depth refrigerator can free up a full cabinet's worth of space in a small room.

We provide you with the layout in 3D before anything is cut, so you can see how the aisle feels, and not just read the dimensions. For more on how that works, check out our kitchen design page.

Door Styles That Belong in an Older House

A flat slab door on a full-overlay box looks right in a 1990s addition, but out of place in an 1850s brick townhouse. For the older borough homes, the styles that tend to sit comfortably with the house are:

  • Inset doors in a beaded face frame: the door sits flush inside the frame, the way cabinetry was built before the mid-20th century. It's more exacting to build and fit, which is exactly why it reads as original.
  • Shaker and simple raised-panel doors, painted, for a kitchen that looks like it could have been there for a substantial amount of time.
  • Quartersawn white oak, stained, where you want the grain to show and the room to feel warmer.

Our Amish cabinetmakers build each cabinet with mortise-and-tenon face frames and dovetailed hardwood drawer boxes. We bring door samples to the house so you can see them next to your specific trim and under your lighting.

Beyond the Borough Line

Kitchen cabinet makers in West Chester, PA The West Chester mailing address covers more than just the borough. It includes large parts of the surrounding townships, where the housing holds mostly postwar through 1990s single-family homes. The kitchen problem there is different than in the borough. Here the room is usually a reasonable size, but the original builder-grade cabinetry has worn noticeably. Delaminating boxes, sagging shelves and hinges that won't hold an adjustment are the usual signs of cabinets that need replacing.

This project is typically a same-footprint replacement rather than a redesign, and it's one of the most common projects we do across the county. If you need cabinetry beyond the kitchen, our main West Chester page covers bathrooms, laundry, built-ins and the rest.

Cost and Timeline

Custom kitchen cabinetry in this market generally runs $600 to $1,200 per linear foot, driven mostly by wood species, door style (inset costs more than overlay), and how much specialty storage goes in. From first contact to a finished kitchen, most projects take 2 to 6 months, and most of that estimate is for build time in-shop. The tear-out and install takes a matter of days, and your existing kitchen stays usable until then. We give you a real number after we measure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need historic district approval to replace my kitchen cabinets?
Interior cabinet replacement generally isn't what the borough's review process looks at. If the project changes anything on the exterior (such as windows, doors, or vents), check with the borough before you commit. We'll point out anything we notice at the measure.

My kitchen is barely 9 feet wide. Is custom cabinetry worth it in a room that small?
Small kitchens are actually where custom pays off the most per foot, because every inch a stock cabinet wastes is an inch you don't have. The total cost is lower, simply because there are fewer linear feet.

What's the practical difference between inset and overlay doors?
Inset doors sit inside the face frame, while overlay doors sit on top of it. Inset looks more traditional and requires tighter tolerances, so it costs more. Overlay gives you slightly more interior access. Both hold up equally well when they're built properly.

How do deliveries work on a borough street with limited parking?
We schedule delivery and install around street parking, and plan the unload before the truck shows up. If the job needs a dumpster or container on the street, the borough may require a permit. We'll tell you in advance so it's handled.

Do you work in the townships around West Chester too?
Yes. The borough and the surrounding townships are all regular territory for us, and so is the rest of Chester County.
