Custom Kitchen Cabinets in Downingtown, PA

The kitchen we point people to first when they ask what our work looks like is in Downingtown. So instead of opening with the town's history (and it has plenty, from the 1701 log house on Lancaster Avenue to the mills that gave it its first name, Milltown), this page opens with that kitchen.

The Kitchen We Built in Downingtown

A Downingtown family was adding on an in-law suite, and the addition reshaped their kitchen along with it. Walls moved, the floor plan changed, and the room's only window came out. They wanted a kitchen that was light, simple, and easy to work in, and their biggest worry was that without the window, it would feel like a cave.

We built them an L-shaped kitchen in solid hardwood with a light stain. The L shape keeps the sink, range, and prep counter within a step or two of each other. The cabinets were set with a laser level, the granite counters were templated off the installed boxes, and the whole kitchen was built in our shop and installed by our own crew. The full write-up, with photos from the demolition to the finished room, is in our Downingtown kitchen remodel case study.

What That Project Taught Us About Light

Custom kitchen cabinets in Downingtown, PA The paint-or-stain decision went in a different direction than most would expect. The homeowners assumed that the paint would be brighter. However, after seeing samples in the room, they chose a light stain. It kept the grain visible and warm, and it still reflected light instead of soaking it up.

The rest of the brightness came from layering:

  • Recessed ceiling lights for general fill across the room.
  • Task lighting over the work zones, so the counters stay free of shadows when someone's standing at them.
  • Lighting built into the cabinetry during the build, wired to a switch, rather than battery-powered puck lights stuck up later.

If your kitchen is losing a window to an addition, or never had a good one, this is the approach we'd start with.

Kitchens for Multigenerational Households

In-law suites and multigenerational living come up often in Downingtown and the townships around it, and they change the needs of the kitchen. Things worth planning for:

  • A second, smaller kitchen or kitchenette in the suite (a sink, a short run of cabinets, space for a small refrigerator and a microwave), built in the same finish as the main kitchen so the house reads as one.
  • Drawers over doors, so nobody has to kneel to reach the back of a base cabinet.
  • Upper storage that doesn't need a step stool for the things used every day, with the high shelves saved for the holiday platters.
  • Counter height chosen for the person using it most, which is easy to choose when the cabinets are built to order.
  • Pull-outs and roll-outs in the pantry and corner cabinets.

Milltown Houses and the Neighborhoods Around Them

Kitchen remodel with custom cabinets in Downingtown, PA Downingtown borough itself is about two square miles along the Lincoln Highway, with older stone, brick, and frame homes close to Lancaster Avenue and the Brandywine. Those kitchens get the same attention any older house does: scribing to walls that aren't square and working around what the house already is.

Much of the Downingtown area, though, is in the townships that surround the borough, where the housing is mostly made up of subdivisions from the last few decades. The layouts in these homes are usually fine, but the original cabinets are failing. A same-footprint replacement is common, and it's a shorter project than a full remodel.

Not Just the Kitchen

While we were working on that same Downingtown house, the family asked for something more personal: a dedicated prayer room. Nothing off the shelf fit what they had in mind, so our Amish craftsmen designed and built the millwork for the room from solid hardwood and finished it by hand. That project is written up separately in our prayer room case study, and it's the kind of work we also do in home offices and built-ins.

How the Construction Holds Up

Everything we build is made the same way as that kitchen: solid hardwood where it matters, dovetailed drawer boxes that get tighter with use, mortise-and-tenon face frames, and a hand-sanded, stained or painted finish sealed with a catalyzed topcoat. A scratch can be sanded out. We design, build, finish and install the cabinetry, and bring in trade partners we've worked with for years for plumbing, electrical, flooring, and tile.

Cost and Timeline

Budget $600 to $1,200 per linear foot for custom cabinetry in this market, depending on species, door style, finish and storage features. Most kitchens take 2 to 6 months from first contact to finished room, most of that in shop build time. When a kitchen is part of an addition like the one above, we sequence our work around the rest of the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do my kitchen at the same time as an addition?
Yes, that's exactly how the Downingtown project above was done. Planning both projects together allowed us to lay out the kitchen around the new floor plan from the start.

Paint or stain if I want a bright kitchen?
Either can work. A light stain keeps the grain and still reads bright, which is what the Downingtown homeowners on this project chose after seeing samples in their own light.

How do you light a kitchen with no window?
In layers. Think: recessed ceiling lights for fill, task lighting over the counters, and lighting built into the cabinets during the build rather than added afterward.

Can you build a kitchenette for an in-law suite to match the main kitchen?
Yes. We build it in the same species and finish so the two spaces feel like cohesive parts of the same house.

Do you work in East Caln, Uwchlan and the other townships around the borough?
Yes. The whole Downingtown area is close to our Honey Brook shop and is all regular territory for us.
