Amish Kitchen Remodeler

At EastSide Cabinet Solutions, we’ve found that working with Amish-made cabinetry requires a completely different mindset than standard remodeling. When you’re dealing with true Amish craftsmanship, you aren't just installing cabinets, you’re installing heirloom furniture. Our custom Amish cabinets are built with solid hardwoods and traditional joinery, things like hand-cut dovetails and mortise-and-tenon joints, that make them significantly heavier and more rigid than anything you’d find in a big-box store.

Because these cabinets don’t have the flex of cheap particle board, the installation has to be much more precise. Here is how we handle the technical side of an Amish kitchen remodel.

Managing the Full Renovation

A kitchen remodel involving Amish cabinetry is a top-to-bottom project. Because these cabinets are built to last a lifetime, the surfaces they sit on and the walls they hang from must be equally durable.

  • Flooring and Substructure: Amish cabinets are incredibly heavy. Before we install new flooring, we inspect the subfloor to ensure it’s structurally sound. Whether we are laying custom tile or wide-plank hardwood, we make sure the foundation is perfectly level. If the floor is off, the weight of the solid wood cabinets can cause shifting later on.
  • Integrated Utilities: During the rough-in phase, we coordinate the plumbing and electrical work to match the custom dimensions of the build. Amish cabinetry is often designed with specific internal configurations, like pull-out spice racks or hidden charging stations, that require outlets and pipes to be placed with zero margin for error.

Engineering for Solid Wood Weight

Professional remodeling team on-site installing a custom Amish kitchen, Chester County, PA The first thing you notice about our Amish cabinets is their weight. A single solid-oak or maple wall cabinet can weigh twice as much as a manufactured one. You cannot simply hang these on a wall and hope for the best.

Our team at EastSide Cabinet Solutions treats the anchoring process as a structural task. We use heavy-duty, high-torque fasteners to lock the solid-wood carcasses directly into the wall studs. This isn't just for safety; it’s because these cabinets are often paired with heavy soapstone or granite tops. We have to ensure that the skeleton of the kitchen can support that combined weight for fifty years without a millimeter of sagging.

Tuning the Hardware

Even a perfectly built door won't feel right if the hinges aren't tuned. Amish doors are thick and heavy, which means they react differently to gravity than hollow-core doors.

Once the cabinets are leveled and locked in, we spend a significant amount of time tuning the room. This involves adjusting the soft-close glides and heavy-duty hinges to account for the weight of the wood. We also use custom-machined templates to mount your handles and pulls, ensuring they are centered to the millimeter.
